Special-Purpose Iron-Source Base Material for Food Mineral Fortification
Ferric Pyrophosphate is a water-insoluble ferric iron salt complexed by pyrophosphate radicals and ferric ions. It is an iron-source food nutritional fortifier permitted under GB 14880, widely applied in cereal products, complementary foods for infants and young children, solid beverages and other goods. Featuring low metallic-iron odour and low tendency to catalyse lipid oxidation, it has four core attributes: high iron content, minimal sensory interference, excellent stability and mild iron-ion release.
Main Components: Ferric Pyrophosphate, molecular formula Fe₄(P₂O₇)₃, CAS No. 10058-44-3
Core Specifications: Iron content ≥24.0 %; heavy metals (lead, arsenic, cadmium) comply with limits specified in GB 1903.14; loss on ignition, fluorides and hydrochloric-acid-insoluble substances meet national-standard requirements; customisable particle-size available.
Appearance: Off-white to pale-yellow fine powder, odourless, virtually free of metallic-iron off-flavour.
Stability: Chemically stable, resistant to oxidative discoloration; insensitive to light and heat; low tendency to induce lipid rancidity. Shelf-life: 24 months under sealed, cool and dry storage conditions.
Solubility: Practically insoluble in water and ethanol; dissociates and releases iron ions under gastric-acid conditions; good compatibility with starch, dietary fibre, sugar alcohols and other ingredients.
➢Regulatory: Complies with GB 1903.14-2016; approved nutritional fortifier under GB 14880-2012. Approved for ordinary foods and complementary foods for infants and young children with simple and standard labelling requirements.
➢Sensory: Faint iron-related off-notes; minimal interference to product colour and flavour; no significant browning; friendly to lipid-containing systems.
➢Stability: Low tendency to catalyse oxidation; resistant to discoloration and deterioration during shelf-life; suitable for baking, extrusion-puffing, solid powder and other processing conditions.
➢Formulation Suitability: Primarily intended for solid-state systems; compatible with vitamins and minerals; not suitable for direct use in transparent liquid beverages.
➢Practicality: High elemental-iron proportion allowing low addition dosage; consistent batch-to-batch performance, controllable dust generation and good powder flowability.
High iron content. Used as a food-grade iron fortifier to supplement dietary iron and prevent insufficient iron intake for various food fortification formulations.
Markedly lower iron-related off-notes compared with water-soluble iron salts such as ferrous sulphate. Reduces negative impacts on finished-product flavour and colour and preserves original sensory quality.
Hardly catalyses fat oxidation and rancidity. Reduces iron-driven pro-oxidative risks and extends shelf-life in lipid-containing cereals, puffed foods and meal-replacement powders.
Heat-resistant and processing-stable. Maintains properties with low processing losses under extrusion-puffing, baking, granulation and other manufacturing conditions.
Insoluble in water; releases iron ions upon exposure to gastric acid in the stomach for mild human absorption.
Can be compounded with calcium, zinc, multiple vitamins, dietary fibre and sugar alcohols. Avoid high-level blending with strong chelating agents that may impair iron bioavailability. More suitable for solid dosage forms.
Ferric Pyrophosphate is a compliant food-grade iron fortifier for dietary iron supplementation:
Provides ferric iron for haemoglobin synthesis, helps sustain normal body iron reserves and lowers risk of dietary iron deficiency.
Iron participates in red-blood-cell generation. Proper supplementation supports normal haematopoiesis and alleviates physical fatigue caused by inadequate iron intake.
Iron is involved in synthesis of multiple enzymes and immune-related proteins to support energy metabolism and normal immune performance.
Less irritating to the digestive tract compared with some water-soluble ferrous salts, suitable for long-term dietary supplementation in food systems.
