Organic-Chelated Base Material for Zinc Fortification
Zinc Citrate is an organic-chelated zinc nutritional fortifier prepared by complexation of zinc ions with citric acid. It is a permitted zinc source complying with GB 14880. Compared with inorganic zinc salts, it delivers low metallic irritation, weak zinc-related off-odour, good bioavailability and excellent compounding stability. It is widely applied in special-diet foods, health foods, solid beverages, dairy products and other fields. It possesses four core attributes: favourable bioavailability, superior sensory performance, low gastrointestinal irritation and strong formula compatibility.
Main Components: Zinc citrate, molecular formula Zn₃(C₆H₅O₇)₂, CAS No. 546-46-3
Core Specifications: Zinc content ≥31.0 %; heavy metals (lead, arsenic, cadmium) comply with limit values specified in GB 1903.18; loss on drying, sulphates, oxalates and other indicators meet regulatory requirements; customisable particle-size available.
Appearance: White to slightly yellowish-white fine powder, nearly odour-free. Loose and uniform powder with good flowability, free of caking and impurities.
Stability: Stable physicochemical properties under solid state; prone to precipitation in aqueous solution under strongly-alkaline conditions. Avoid compounding with high-concentration phytic acid and tannins. Shelf-life: 24 months under sealed, cool and dry storage conditions.
Solubility: Slightly soluble in water, insoluble in ethanol. Dissociates and releases zinc ions under weakly-acid and neutral conditions. Exhibits excellent compatibility with proteins, colloids, sugar alcohols, vitamins and minerals.
➢Regulatory: Complies with GB 1903.18-2016, listed as an approved nutritional-fortifying zinc source under GB 14880. Permitted for ordinary foods, complementary foods for infants and young children, special-diet foods and health foods with clean and compliant labelling.
➢Absorption: Organic-chelated structure with low dependence on gastric-acid dissociation. Less affected by dietary inhibitory factors such as phytic acid compared with inorganic zinc e.g. zinc sulphate, delivering excellent bioavailability.
➢Sensory: Chelation binds free zinc ions, significantly reducing metallic zinc off-odour with little interference to finished-product flavour and colour.
➢Formulation Suitability: Applicable for both solid and weakly-acid liquid systems; synergistic effect with vitamin A and vitamin D. Avoid high-concentration phytic acid and polyphenols to prevent reduced zinc bioavailability.
➢Practicality: High zinc content with controllable addition dosage. Good powder-processing performance and high batch-to-batch consistency, delivering superior comprehensive sensory performance versus inorganic zinc salts.
Citrate-chelated structure reduces reliance on gastric-acid dissociation. Zinc ions can be effectively released under weakly-acid and neutral gastrointestinal environments, with low interference from dietary phytic acid and dietary fibre to secure zinc absorption efficiency.
Chelated structure mitigates metallic off-odour derived from free zinc ions. It hardly triggers product discoloration or flavour deterioration, better preserving original food taste and flavour and suiting clean-label formulas.
Less irritating to digestive-tract mucosa than inorganic zinc salts such as zinc sulphate, lowering risks of nausea and gastric discomfort. Suitable for long-term dietary zinc supplementation for sensitive populations including children and pregnant-lactating women.
Freely compoundable with vitamin A, vitamin D, B-group vitamins, calcium, magnesium, iron, sugar alcohols and dietary fibre to exert synergistic physiological effects for multi-vitamin-mineral compound formulas.
Applicable to powder products, compressed tablets, solid beverages, weakly-acid drinks and other dosage forms. Strongly-alkaline environments shall be avoided during production to prevent chelate-structure destruction and zinc-salt precipitation.
Good compatibility with common food-system ingredients. Rarely triggers abnormal reactions with proteins and colloids. Suitable for baked goods, meal-replacement products, reconstitutable powders, functional snacks and many other product categories.
Zinc Citrate is a safe and compliant organic-zinc nutritional fortifier with high human-body adaptability and multiple physiological functions:
Supplies bio-available zinc for human body, participates in synthesis of immune-related enzymes and proteins and sustains normal immune-response level.
Zinc participates in cell proliferation and differentiation to support children’s growth-development. It takes part in skin-mucosa metabolism and maintains normal condition of skin and hair.
Participates in synthesis of various digestive enzymes, maintains normal taste perception, improves appetite and guarantees normal operation of human basic metabolism.
Low digestive-tract irritation. Adaptable to long-term nutritional conditioning scenarios including zinc supplementation for children’s growth, nutritional supply for pregnant-lactating women and daily dietary zinc intake for adults.
