High-Moisturizing Plasticizing General-Purpose Polyol Sweetening Base Material
Sorbitol is a natural 6-carbon polyol (sugar alcohol). It occurs naturally in small amounts in apples, pears, berries, seaweed and other fruits, vegetables and plants. Industrially, it is mainly produced by catalytic hydrogenation using glucose as raw material. It is a food additive permitted for use in China. CNS No. 19.006, INS No. 420, CAS: 50-70-4. Complies with national standard GB 28307-2012. In accordance with GB 2760-2024, it shall be used in appropriate amounts according to production requirements in all kinds of foods. It features four core attributes: excellent moisturizing-plasticizing performance, mild sweetness, freezing-point depression and broad compatibility.
Main Components: High-purity sorbitol monomer (hexanehexol)
Core Specifications: Food-grade purity on dry basis 98.0%~101.0% (powder and liquid grades customizable upon request)
Appearance: White crystalline powder / granules (liquid form is colourless transparent syrup); odour-free and free of visible impurities. Gentle and mellow sweetness at approximately 50-60 % of sucrose sweetness; faint cooling sensation upon dissolution; full-bodied and rich sweet profile.
Stability: Resistant to high-low temperature and pH variation. Structure remains stable under processing conditions below 190 °C; moderate Maillard-reaction activity; strongly hygroscopic. Shelf-life: 24 months when hermetically stored in cool, dry and dark conditions.
Solubility: Highly soluble in hot and cold pure water; slight endothermic effect during dissolution. Aqueous solution is clear and transparent. Exhibits excellent compatibility with proteins, lipids, colloids, organic acids and high-potency sweeteners.
➢Regulatory: Passed global authoritative safety assessments including FDA GRAS, JECFA, EFSA and South Korea MFDS. Unlimited addition is allowed for most food categories in China with flexible compliant labelling options.
➢Processing: Outstanding moisturizing, plasticizing and freezing-point-depression effects; improves product plasticity and inhibits crystallization and grain-formation. Minor batch-to-batch index fluctuation, suitable for production of multiple dosage forms including powder and syrup.
➢Health: Lower calories than sucrose, low GI value and weak insulin dependence. Note: Under equal dosage, its intestinal osmotic effect is higher than most sugar alcohols; formula addition level shall be reasonably controlled.
➢Formulation Compatibility: Freely combinable with erythritol, xylitol, lactitol, allulose, steviol glycosides and mogrosides to adjust sweetness and balance hygroscopicity, suitable for full-range sugar-free and low-sugar formulations.
➢Practicality: Multi-functional with sweetness, moisturization, plasticization and anti-crystallization properties. Cost-effective raw material, a classic long-established polyol widely applied in food, personal-care and pharmaceutical sectors.
Sweetness reaches 50-60 % of sucrose, delivering full-bodied and gentle sweetness without obvious bitter after-taste. Blending with high-potency sweeteners or other polyols can easily boost sweetness without large-scale reformulation, enabling low-sugar / sugar-free product upgrading.
Calorific value is about 60 % of sucrose with low GI value. Human-body metabolism has low insulin dependence, resulting in lower post-prandial blood-glucose elevation compared with sucrose. Suitable for glycemic-control populations under reasonably controlled formula dosage.
Strong water-binding capacity delivers superior moisturizing and plasticizing performance. It improves material flexibility, inhibits hardening and brittleness, optimizes forming performance of confectionery, pastes and bakery goods, and prevents cracking and sanding.
Significantly depresses freezing point of aqueous solutions, modifies ice-crystal morphology, enhances freeze-thaw resistance of frozen products, and delivers smooth and soft texture for frozen desserts.
pH-resistant and heat-resistant. Compatible with boiling, baking, UHT sterilization and other processes. Hardly decomposes under normal processing conditions and is compatible with various food systems including gels, proteins and lipids.
Oral pathogenic bacteria such as Streptococcus mutans cannot metabolize sorbitol to produce organic acids. It reduces dental-plaque formation and lowers enamel-erosion risk, providing auxiliary anti-caries effect.
Sorbitol is a classic industrially mass-produced hexitol with food-safety credentials and multiple physiological effects:
Slow intestinal absorption imposes mild stimulation on blood glucose and insulin. It generates lower post-prandial glycemic response than sucrose at equal dosage and provides a gentle sweetening option for blood-glucose-management populations.
Incompletely absorbed in small intestine; most fraction enters large intestine and regulates intestinal osmotic pressure. High dosage may easily cause bloating and diarrhoea, so formula addition level needs to be controlled.
Applied in oral and personal-care preparations, it helps maintain mucosal hydration and relieves oral dryness.
Partial replacement of sucrose reduces total product calories and assists dietary calorie management.
➢Dairy Products
Yoghurt & fermented milk: Partially replaces sucrose, moisturizes and maintains texture, delivers gentle sweetening and reduces product calorie.
Milk-based beverages & plant-protein drinks: Improves system viscosity, provides mild sweetness, prevents protein precipitation, suitable for low-sugar dairy formulations.
