A Multi-functional Water-Soluble Dietary Fiber Empowering Healthy Formulations
Polydextrose is a synthetic water-soluble dietary fiber. It is a randomly cross-linked glucose polymer produced by melt polycondensation of glucose, sorbitol and citric acid under high temperature, with 1,6-glycosidic bonds as the predominant linkage. As a food additive, its CNS No. is 20.022, INS No. 1200, CAS No. 68424-04-4. Listed in GB 2760 as thickener, leavening agent, humectant and stabilizer. It is also widely recognized as a water-soluble dietary fiber and prebiotic.
Main Component: Polydextrose (D-glucose polymer)
Core Index: Glucose polymeric units ≥90.0% (customizable); molecular weight ≤22,000 Daltons
Appearance: White to off-white powder (or granules), odorless, slightly sweet or faintly acidic taste, free of visible impurities
Stability: Chemically stable, resistant to degradation under high temperature and acidic conditions. Shelf life: 24 months when hermetically sealed, stored in cool, dry and dark environment
Solubility: Highly soluble in water; pH of 10% aqueous solution: 2.5–7.0. Features excellent dispersibility and broad formulation compatibility
Regulatory Approval: Authorized for use in more than 50 countries globally; permitted for use as required by production process per GB 2760
Processing Performance: Acid-resistant, heat-stable, outstanding water solubility and consistent batch-to-batch quality
Health Benefits: Low-calorie, low GI, prebiotic activity, supports intestinal health and regulates glucose & lipid metabolism
Clean Label: Can be labelled as "water-soluble dietary fiber", complying with trends for healthy food
Formulation Synergy: Compatible with sweeteners, hydrocolloids, proteins and other ingredients without masking native flavour
Polydextrose is barely digested by human digestive enzymes, delivering approximately 1 kcal per gram, less than one quarter of the caloric value of sucrose. It serves as an ideal bulking agent for low-energy foods.
Readily soluble in both cold and hot water, forming transparent solutions with moderate viscosity. Remains stable without precipitation under acidic environments and high-temperature processing conditions such as baking and sterilization.
Hardly absorbed in the small intestine, resulting in minimal postprandial blood glucose fluctuation. Its metabolism does not rely on insulin, suitable for diabetics and individuals sensitive to blood sugar.
Reaches the large intestine intact and is fermented by beneficial gut bacteria, stimulating proliferation of Bifidobacteria, Lactobacilli and other probiotics, inhibiting pathogenic bacteria and balancing intestinal microecology.
Possesses strong water-binding capacity. It improves the softness of flour products and pastries, delays starch retrogradation and extends shelf life.
Oral bacteria cannot utilize polydextrose to produce acid, hence it will not erode tooth enamel.
As a functional dietary fiber, polydextrose exerts multiple physiological effects in human body:
Intestinal Health: Absorbs water to increase stool bulk, stimulates intestinal peristalsis and facilitates bowel movement. Fermentation generates short-chain fatty acids, lowers intestinal pH and strengthens intestinal mucosal barrier.
Weight Management: Forms a physical barrier in the stomach to delay gastric emptying and enhance satiety; binds partial fats inside the intestine to inhibit lipid absorption.
Glucose & Lipid Metabolism Regulation: Slows glucose uptake and reduces postprandial blood glucose peak; adsorbs bile acids for excretion, helping lower triglyceride and LDL-C levels.
Mineral Absorption: Acidifies intestinal environment to boost absorption of calcium, magnesium and other minerals.
Immune Modulation: Preserves integrity of intestinal mucosa and stimulates activity of immune cells via optimizing gut microbiota.
