Natural Plant-Derived Water-Soluble Dietary Fiber & Premium Prebiotic to Empower Healthy Formulations
Inulin is a natural fructan water-soluble dietary fiber manufactured from the rhizomes of Asteraceae plants such as chicory and Jerusalem artichoke via low-temperature hot water extraction, filtration, purification, concentration and spray drying. It is a mixture of linear polysaccharides composed of D-fructose linked by β-2,1 glycosidic bonds with one glucose unit at the terminal end, with a Degree of Polymerization (DP) ranging from 2 to 60.
CAS No.: 9005-80-5
CNS No. for Food Additive: 20.033
INS No.: 424
National Standard Implemented: GB 28308-2012 National Food Safety Standard Food Additive Inulin
It was approved as a New Food Raw Material by the National Health Commission of the People’s Republic of China in 2009. Classified as thickener, stabilizer, humectant and leavening agent under the GB 2760 system, it is also defined as natural water-soluble dietary fiber and classic functional prebiotic. Differentiated from chemically synthesized dietary fiber, it falls into the category of natural medicinal and edible plant extracts. It delivers three core values: targeted regulation of intestinal flora, intestinal barrier repair, and mild modulation of blood glucose and blood lipids. It features outstanding water solubility, high fermentation activity and prominent natural clean label advantages.
Main Ingredient:
Linear fructan mixture derived from chicory/Jerusalem artichoke with fructose DP 2–60. The proportion of fructooligosaccharides (DP 2–9) determines the prebiotic activity level
Core Indicators:
Two high-purity grades with total inulin polysaccharide content ≥90.0% and ≥95.0%; reducing sugar controllable at ≤2%; average molecular weight 3,000–5,000 Da, free of exogenous chemical polymerization by-products
Appearance:
Free-flowing fine powder from pure white to pale yellow, nearly tasteless with an extremely faint natural aroma of plant rhizomes, free of musty, burnt or other off-odors. Its 10% aqueous solution is clear, slightly viscous and transparent without flocculation, stratification or precipitation after standing at room temperature
Stability:
Excellent heat and acid resistance with stable molecular structure in conventional food processing systems at pH 3.0–8.0; slow hydrolysis occurs only under prolonged high temperature in strong acid environments. Shelf life: 24 months when sealed and stored in a cool, dry and dark place; moderate hygroscopicity with low caking tendency
Solubility:
Rapidly soluble in cold, warm and hot water with solubility exceeding 75g/100mL. pH value of 10% aqueous solution ranges from 4.5 to 6.5 with superior powder flowability. Highly compatible with milk-based systems, plant proteins, grain powders, hydrocolloids, sauces and probiotic compound formulas
➢ Regulatory Compliance
Legally permitted for domestic use in accordance with GB 28308-2012 and approved as a New Food Raw Material by the National Health Commission in 2009, with supporting application specifications for the feed industry. It has obtained authoritative food safety filings in multiple jurisdictions including FDA GRAS, JECFA, EFSA and South Korea MFDS, with mature systems for export declaration and cross-border registration, and zero risk of animal-derived allergens.
➢ Processing Performance
Dissolves rapidly at ambient temperature without co-solvents required. Tolerates multiple industrial processes including UHT sterilization, spray drying, baking, prolonged sauce cooking and tableting granulation, with low degradation and browning rates under high temperature. Good powder flow ensures smooth feeding on production lines and high fault tolerance in industrial manufacturing.
➢ Health Benefits
With a natural fructan structure, it is barely digested and decomposed by digestive enzymes in the human upper gastrointestinal tract and reaches the large intestine intact for fermentation. It integrates three major functions: potent prebiotic activity, intestinal laxation and glycemic & lipid regulation, suitable for middle-aged and elderly populations, hyperglycemic groups, sedentary individuals with constipation and those with suboptimal metabolic health.
➢ Clean Label Value
Can be directly labeled as “Inulin”, “Chicory Extract”, “Water-Soluble Dietary Fiber” or “Prebiotic” on ingredient lists. Sourced from natural plant extraction, it aligns with the clean label trend for health foods, low-sugar/sugar-free products and functional meal replacements.
➢ Synergistic Compatibility
Freely compoundable with FOS, GOS, polydextrose, resistant maltodextrin, various probiotic strains, plant polysaccharides and sweetener systems. It amplifies the proliferation of beneficial intestinal flora, protects probiotics against gastric acid and bile salt erosion via its matrix, improves powder flowability and enhances the preservative and bacteriostatic capacity of the overall formula for multi-dimensional synergistic effects.
Inulin cannot be digested and absorbed in the human stomach and small intestine, and only generates energy via fermentation by intestinal flora in the large intestine. Its calorific value is approximately 1.2 kcal/g, far lower than sucrose (4 kcal/g), making it an ideal bulking dietary fiber ingredient for low-calorie, calorie-controlled and weight-loss formulations.
Fully soluble in both cold and hot water to form a clear, moderately viscous aqueous solution. Its molecular structure remains stable under acidic juice systems, high-temperature baking, high-pressure sterilization for meat products and other working conditions without crystallization, precipitation or stratification, compatible with the vast majority of food processing technologies.
Hardly degraded in the small intestine, it will not rapidly enter the bloodstream to cause blood glucose spikes. With an extremely low GI value, it imposes no extra burden on insulin metabolism and is suitable for long-term consumption by diabetics, individuals with impaired glucose tolerance and people pursuing sugar control and weight management.
Upon reaching the colon intact, it acts as a dedicated fermentable carbon source to selectively boost the growth of beneficial flora such as Bifidobacteria, Lactobacilli and Lactobacillus acidophilus, competitively occupying the survival niche of harmful bacteria including Escherichia coli, Clostridium perfringens and Bacteroides, so as to bidirectionally balance the intestinal microecology.
Possesses excellent water molecule binding capacity. When added to baked goods and cereal products, it locks free water, retards starch retrogradation and aging, maintains the soft texture of cakes and breads and effectively extends shelf life. It optimizes water holding capacity in sauces and meat products to boost yield rates.
Salivary amylase in the oral cavity cannot break down inulin, and oral pathogenic bacteria cannot utilize it to ferment and produce organic acids that erode tooth enamel. Applied in sugar-free candies, chewing gums and compressed tablets, it effectively reduces caries risk.
As a highly active natural plant-derived water-soluble dietary fiber, inulin delivers systematic physiological conditioning effects for groups suffering from intestinal disorders, metabolic imbalance, weakened immunity and age-related metabolic decline in the elderly:
It absorbs water and expands in the intestinal tract to increase stool volume, stimulate colonic peristalsis and soften impacted feces for relief of slow-transit refractory constipation. It optimizes flora composition to reduce intestinal inflammatory responses, mitigate chronic diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome triggered by flora disturbance, and rebuild regular autonomous intestinal motility.
It absorbs water in the stomach to form a gel-like substance, delay gastric emptying and deliver long-lasting satiety to naturally cut calorie intake from main meals and snacks. It physically encapsulates part of dietary fat in the gut to reduce excessive lipid absorption and support weight management.
It slows the absorption rate of free glucose in the small intestine to flatten postprandial blood glucose peaks. It binds bile acids in the intestinal tract for excretion via feces, accelerates hepatic cholesterol catabolism, and helps lower serum triglycerides and LDL-C levels.
Short-chain fatty acids generated from probiotic fermentation lower local colonic pH, acidify the intestinal microenvironment, promote dissociation of mineral ions including calcium, iron, zinc and magnesium, enhance their transintestinal absorption efficiency, and assist in improving senile osteoporosis in the elderly and iron-deficiency anemia in women.
Short-chain fatty acids such as butyrate produced by flora fermentation fuel colonic epithelial cells, repair damaged intestinal villi, close gaps between epithelial cells and alleviate leaky gut syndrome. An intact and healthy intestinal mucosal barrier activates gut-associated lymphoid tissues, elevates the body’s basal resistance and reduces the incidence of recurrent inflammation and allergies.
