Modified Starch-Derived Multi-Functional Water-Soluble Dietary Fiber Empowering Healthy Formulations
Resistant Dextrin is a low-molecular-weight modified water-soluble dietary fiber manufactured from botanical starches such as edible corn starch and cassava starch via high-temperature gelatinization, acid hydrolysis, transglycosidation, molecular rearrangement, refining & purification, and spray drying. It is a resistant starch derivative hardly digested and absorbed in the human small intestine, with an internally branched cross-linked structure formed through multiple glycosidic bonds including α-1,2, α-1,3 and α-1,6 linkages.
Food Additive CNS No.: 20.041
INS No.: 1450
CAS No.: 9041-46-7
Implemented National Standard: GB 28309-2012 National Food Safety Standard Food Additive Resistant Dextrin
Classified as thickener, stabilizer, humectant and anticaking agent under the GB 2760 system, it is not only a legally compliant food additive, but also the most widely applied starch-sourced water-soluble dietary fiber and mild prebiotic in the industry.
Main Ingredient: Branched oligoglucose polymer formed by molecular rearrangement of starch, with resistant digestible fraction ≥85%
Core Indicators: Two high-gradient specifications with total dietary fiber ≥85.0% and ≥90.0%; reducing sugar ≤3.0%; average molecular weight 2,000–6,000 Da, free of artificial chemical cross-linking by-products
Appearance: Free-flowing fine powder ranging from white to pale beige, practically tasteless with an extremely faint natural grain aroma of starch, free of burnt, rancid or other off-odors. Its 10% aqueous solution is a clear pale amber transparent liquid with low viscosity, showing no stratification, flocculation or precipitation after standing at room temperature
Stability: Outstanding resistance to strong acid, high temperature and processing shear force, maintaining stable molecular structure in full-range food systems at pH 2.0–9.0 and tolerating ultra-high temperature sterilization and prolonged boiling. Shelf life: 24 months when sealed and stored in a cool, dry and dark place; minimal hygroscopicity with low caking tendency
Solubility: Fully and rapidly soluble in cold water with solubility exceeding 80g/100mL. The pH value of 10% aqueous solution is 4.0–6.0 with excellent powder flowability. It features supreme compatibility with milk-based matrices, plant proteins, grain systems, hydrocolloids, probiotics and oil emulsification systems
➢ Regulatory Compliance
Legally permitted for domestic use in accordance with GB 28309-2012, and allowed for appropriate addition in all food categories as required by production under GB 2760. It has obtained authoritative safety filings worldwide including FDA GRAS, JECFA, EFSA and South Korea MFDS, with supporting application specifications for the feed sector. Mature procedures are available for export declaration and cross-border registration, with zero allergen risks.
➢ Processing Performance
Instantly soluble in cold water without pre-heating treatment. Its low-viscosity property will not alter the original consistency and mouthfeel of finished products. It is adaptable to full industrial processes including UHT sterilization, spray drying, high-temperature baking, prolonged sauce simmering, tableting granulation and extrusion puffing, with low degradation and browning rates under high temperature. Smooth feeding on production lines delivers high fault tolerance in industrial manufacturing.
➢ Health Benefits
Strong digestive resistance, low calorie and extremely low GI value, accompanied by mild prebiotic activity. It bidirectionally regulates intestinal flora, flattens postprandial blood glucose and assists lipid metabolism modulation, applicable to an extensive range of consumer groups.
➢ Clean Label Value
Can be directly labeled as “Resistant Dextrin”, “Water-Soluble Dietary Fiber” or “Modified Starch” on ingredient lists with clear plant starch-derived identity, perfectly aligning with the clean label trend for sugar-free/low-sugar foods, meal replacements and functional health products.
➢ Synergistic Compatibility
Freely compoundable with polydextrose, inulin, FOS, GOS, various sweeteners, probiotic strains, plant polysaccharides and emulsifying colloids. It synergistically enhances intestinal conditioning effects, optimizes powder flowability and boosts the preservative and bacteriostatic capacity of the overall formulation.
Most molecular structures of resistant dextrin cannot be decomposed and absorbed by amylase in the human small intestine, and only generates energy via fermentation by intestinal microorganisms in the large intestine, with a calorific value of approximately 1.2 kcal/g, far lower than sucrose (4 kcal/g). It serves as the preferred lightweight bulking dietary fiber ingredient for low-calorie weight loss and energy-controlled formulations.
Fully dissolvable in cold water to form a crystal-clear, low-viscosity non-sticky aqueous solution. Its molecular structure remains stable under harsh working conditions such as highly acidic juice systems, high-temperature baking for bakery goods, high-pressure sterilization for meat products and high-shear extrusion puffing, without crystallization, precipitation, stratification or turbidity, compatible with nearly all deep food processing technologies.
With minimal digestion and absorption rate in the small intestine, it will not trigger rapid blood glucose spikes after ingestion. The extremely low GI value imposes no extra metabolic burden on pancreatic insulin secretion, suitable for daily addition by diabetics, individuals with impaired glucose tolerance and populations pursuing long-term sugar control and weight loss.
Undigested fractions reach the colon intact and act as slow-release carbon sources to selectively boost the proliferation of beneficial intestinal flora such as Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli, inhibit colonization of harmful bacteria including Escherichia coli and Clostridium perfringens, and gently rebuild balanced intestinal flora.
Possesses strong water molecule binding capacity. When incorporated into bread, cakes and cereal products, it binds free water to effectively retard starch retrogradation and staling, preserving the soft texture of baked goods. It improves water holding capacity in meat products and sauces to elevate cooking yield rates.
Salivary amylase in the oral cavity hardly breaks down resistant dextrin, and oral pathogenic bacteria cannot ferment it to produce organic acids that erode tooth enamel. Its application in sugar-free candies, chewing gums and compressed tablets effectively reduces caries incidence.
As a highly stable starch-sourced water-soluble dietary fiber, resistant dextrin delivers systematic physiological conditioning effects for groups suffering from intestinal dysfunction, elevated postprandial blood glucose, metabolic sub-health and age-related metabolic decline in the elderly:
It absorbs water and expands in the large intestine to increase stool volume and accelerate colonic peristalsis for relief of slow-transit constipation. Short-chain fatty acids generated from flora fermentation lower local colonic acidity, mitigate mild intestinal inflammation, relieve diarrhea induced by irritable bowel syndrome and flora disturbance, and rebuild regular intestinal peristalsis rhythm.
It hydrates and forms colloidal substances in the stomach to delay gastric emptying and deliver long-lasting satiety, spontaneously cutting calorie intake from main meals and snacks. It physically encapsulates partial dietary fat in the intestinal tract to reduce excessive lipid absorption and support body weight and fat mass management.
It slows the absorption rate of free dietary glucose in the small intestine to flatten postprandial blood glucose peaks. It binds bile acids in the gut for excretion via feces, accelerates hepatic cholesterol catabolism, and helps reduce serum triglycerides and low-density lipoprotein (LDL-C) levels.
Short-chain fatty acids metabolized by beneficial bacteria acidify the colonic microenvironment, promote dissociation of mineral ions including calcium, iron, zinc and magnesium, enhance their transintestinal absorption efficiency, and assist in ameliorating senile osteoporosis and iron-deficiency anemia in women.
Short-chain fatty acids such as butyrate fuel colonic epithelial cells, repair damaged intestinal villi, close gaps between intestinal epithelial cells and alleviate leaky gut syndrome. An intact and healthy intestinal mucosal barrier activates gut-associated lymphoid tissues, elevates the body’s overall basal immune resistance and reduces the frequency of recurrent allergies and chronic inflammation.
